Key Project

Improvement of Ongata Rongai - Kitengela to Gravel Standards

About

The gravelling of a twenty three (23km) kilometre road linking two major towns in Kajiado County (Kitengela and Ongata Rongai), the area also happens to be a major source of raw materials for the cement industry. It involved a major undertaking of earthworks from excavating to carting away large amounts of clay soil whilst also bringing in suitable gravel to work into smooth roads for better accessibility.

Challenges

The major challenges the constant use of road by heavy commercial vehicles, approximately 300 trucks a day. Large clay soil deposits had to be removed in order for the road to be useable all year round. The project being in a wildlife corridor meant that a new aspect of health and safety had to be introduced to protect both the staff and the wildlife.
